Newsletter – October 2024

The Launch | October 2024

It’s officially fall, even though out here on the West Coast it doesn’t feel like it as we have had a beautiful September full of flying!

Lots of you seem to be planning flying trips as I have processed a lot of IPPI cards lately. Our new MMS (member management system) on the website is still a work in progress, but once that is up and running we will be able to put the IPPI logo right on your virtual cards. We will send out an announcement once we get close but for now the plastic card is still the way to go.

Elections are coming up soon – for 2025 the regions up for re-election are: Atlantic, BC, Ontario and Prairies. The current directors for these regions are happy to stay on with the exception of Ontario which will be seeking a new volunteer. We would love to see a Hang Glider and/or a female pilot come forward from Ontario to balance out the board! You don’t need to be a long-time member or instructor, our board represents all pilots across all levels.

Any active member is welcome to put their name forward for the region they reside in, and if there is more than one member interested in a seat on the Board we will hold an election. We generally hold an online call once per month so it’s not a huge time commitment but an important part of our volunteer organization. Terms are for 2 years – feel free to email the office for more info or check out our SOPs.

The safety committee has been busy preparing reports and compiling data, which we will share in each newsletter. The latest is the report from Luskville, which you can read about here:

The Safety Committee has received numerous incident and accident reports over the last years. To help our safety, the Safety Committee is spearheading an effort to analyze the reports, which require some data extraction (reading and categorizing). We are looking for experienced pilots, both hang gliders and paraglider, to help us with that effort. If you are interested in making sense of accident report data, solving puzzles, and contributing to our overall safety, this could be a great experience!

Requirement: Large flying experience (10+ years)

Commitment: 10-15 hours this Fall/Winter
